Some people in my life love me more then you and have graced me with certain electronic devices making the whole "documenting our brand of scum" a bit easier at the moment, hence the more recent updates as of late.
We're not really a band that thrives on the mystery of it all, honest dudes playing music for ourselves and sharing bits of our experience how/when we see fit is more like it.
No cloaks to hide behind, no paint to hide our ugly faces.

This is what it looks and sounds like when three of us get together on fall evenings in New England.

Been awhile since this has happened. We're taking a new approach to this whole game. When schedules make sense we practice. When time allows shows might happen again (they will). New practice space, new haircuts and more sore parts.

The song playing is a new song, very rough and will most likely be gone in a few days after we realize how shit the recording quality is, but for now we're feeling alright. That will change.
Just peaking our heads out for a momentary glimpse into this whole fucking mess we've taken 8 years to get ourselves in. Angry old bearded men still playing loud annoying "music".

We're all back safely from our west coast tour. 109 hours and 48 minutes and 7128.42 miles in 15 days.

Not going to say much this time (going to let the pictures below speak for themselves). But to have EVERY show we played on tour be fucking righteous is something we have never experienced. Not one bad show...in fact L.A was even awesome (who knew).

There was a lot of effort that went into making this so successful, huge thanks to Smash, Brian, Joel and everyone that surrounds there worlds. We met absolutely amazing people on this trip from all over the country. The usual bitter the_Network did not come back that way this time.

We were also lucky enough to have the almighty J.Pettinato with us "documenting our brand of scum" (sweet full cirlce with the blog).

Yo Buttheads.
So we'll be doing a west coast tour come mid january. We'll be skiping every thing on the east coast this time cause we just did a tour there already a few months back. In other words don't say dumb shit like "please come here" when you know damn well where you live either is a complete shit hole (cue raised hands from Florida and anywhere between Austin and AZ) or we've already been there.
Even though we hate L.A, we'll be starting the tour there. I don't think we've ever played L.A without getting kicked out of the venue, owing someone a lot of money or thinking it "went well".
But we're idiots and we stick to tradition so L.A is the start date...kinda.
After the last tour we did and heaping way too many ugly looking asshooles in a van we've decided we're going for comfort on this trip. Meaning we'll be driving the van the full distance from New Hampshire to L.A with no shows in between...well maybe one show. But the chances of that are un-likely at best, and where we have no idea.
5 dudes in a van and 3 days of solid 24hr driving...yes, idiots!
The dates are below as well as the first flyer (thanks kindly to Smash Mckenney) whom not only booked this tour graciously for us but also will appear at every show head butting every asshole that gets in her way. I'm calling for more blood and less teeth by the end of this tour.

So a few months after a year since I started this blog and now it's come to this. Actual hard copies of the CD, actual hard copies of THE vinyl and posters, shirts, patches, pins (maybe! after losing two shipments already in the mail) and a TOUR coming up. Things are indeed happening!
We played the kick off record release show last night at a friends house. Very fitting venue for us. Myself and Kev lived on court st (where the show was) almost 8 years ago to the date when we started this band with Tim. After 8 years, touring around the world and countless ups and downs we couldn't be more excited to play for our friends on our old stomping grounds.
This is all we've wanted to do since we started this whole fuck parade we call the_Network. And last night put things in perspective again. We're not a band that likes playing stages or likes playing in front of a shit on of people. From the beginning it was always about playing for your friends and doing what we wanted, on our own without anyone telling us what to do. Not sure where I'm going with all this...but last night brought some proper rage for a fitting second full length record release.

I'm sure photo's will arise soon, but what I can say (as I sit in my blood soaked shirt) is that teeth were lost, beers were thrown and shirts were taken off.

This is the limited to 30 (YES only 30) record release vinyl...I think there might be a copy or two we stashed away. If anyone is interested get in touch over at endtransmission@hotmail and we'll do our best. The proper vinyl will be released in the next few weeks via closed casket activities. Ever wonder what it would sound like if you could take the sounds of a slaughterhouse, blend them with the audio of a plane crashing into a sea made of sharp metal objects and then turn the whole thing into music? Well stop wondering because it would sound like The Network a New Hampshire based band that feel to me like what Black Flag would be if they’d come together in 2009 instead of 1981. Their latest album Bishop Kent Manning is a concept record about a corrupt televangelist based on a short story one of the band members wrote. Yep, you add a Pettibone cover and you’ve got Black Flag in the 21st century.

Don’t get me wrong The Network obviously isn’t Black Flag but they have that same darkness looming over what they write. Not in the silly or cliché way metal bands try to manufacture darkness with satanic imagery but in a way that draws in from the poisons that infect all of us. The Network distills their power from the bleeding of those poisons and letting us view the black ooze they leave behind. Taking cues from Rorschach, Deadguy, Black Flag and Negative Approach a band like The Network give me a bit more hope for the future of modern hardcore punk.

Bishop Kent Manning is, like most concept albums, best when listened to from beginning to end. This isn’t a singles record but more an audio assault that works better when it’s delivered as one impenetrable slab of sound. There’s lots of interesting guitar work happening within this slab though, cool harmonies, noise solos and dissonant chords that rattle the spine. The Network knows how to play but they seem more interested in kicking the living hell out of you than impressing you with their skill.

The Network also has a great sense of how dynamics can help with the emotional weight of a song. So many bands seem to think dynamics mean quite-loud-quiet while The Network bring a lot more color to the table both musically and vocally. The vocals and guitars seem to work off of each other instead of being in competition. When the vocals are right in your face the guitars are usually snaking around just below the surface or they’re holding up the base that the vocals are launching from. When the guitars and drums begin to get more chaotic the vocals seem to straighten out and hold the song together. Instead of just screaming over noise riffs The Network really focus on creating songs inside the noise.

The Northeast is a dark and gloomy place, I know, I live there to. It rains, it’s overcast and Father Winter graces us with his presence for eight months out of the year. The Network are a musical manifestation of not only that but also the oddity and general weirdness of the Northeast. Bishop Kent Manning is a loud, noisy, obnoxious and completely engrossing album. This is the type of music that carries the torch of what started with what Greg Ginn and some of the other abrasive punk innovators were doing. I’m amped to see what The Network do next.

Not even sure what to post on here anymore. In the world of myspace, facebook, blogspots, websites (remember them) and now twitter...what the f'ing fuck fuck...is too much information bad. Do people really care. Do you realize that books still exist and that the outdoors may not be as scary as you assume. Anyway, just a few things to chime in about.
Next weekend we are heading to Puerto Rico. We'll be playing friday and sunday for sure. Saturday we kinda left open to see where the day takes us, most likely we won't be playing but if we do it will be a real last minute thing and only a handful of people will be there. The info is somewhere online..find it! or ask a Puertican punk. Enough about that.
This blog started as a way to document the process of the new full length. Still trying to stick to that but the project is wrapping up and slowing down towards the end. This blog most likely we start to turn into a more personal way to keep people updated on what we see fit..shows, touring, future releases..really wherever it goes it will be less formated and more off the cuff.
But till then a little update on Bishop Kent Manning. Everything sonically is finshed...recording, mixing, mastering..all that.
We've shifted years now and are working on the design ideas with good friend Mike Wohlberg .
Also as previously said Closed Casket Activites will be releasing the vinyl version right around the same time Black Market Activities releases the cd and digital formats. I'll keep that part a mystery though...maybe a summer release, maybe not. With keeping with theme we will be releasing a limited amount of Vinyl of 666 copies. Justin (CCA) will be setting a pre-order thing once we get things sorted but be on the look out..summer?
Guess that's it for now...other then the Australia tour we are doing at the end of April. Details for that look like this.

Body:
Act I

-The “opening scene” is the gunshot in the bank and the subsequent reaction of the bank’s customers.

-Bishop Kent Manning is introduced while deliriously waking up on a surgeon’s table and seeing a bullet being removed from his abdomen. Scenes are intercut between the surgeons operating on him and moments from his past. His past is highlighted by a great faith in god, images of preaching in front of a podium to thousands of followers, his father slaughtering farm animals, his father’s funeral, and various acts of criminal financial management. During the surgery, and in a delirious state, Kent prays to God but feels surprisingly unfulfilled.

-Recovering in his hospital bed at St. Anne’s Memorial Hospital, he is visited by his assistant, his camera ready wife, politicians, PR agents working for his television special, “Bishop Kent Manning’s Rising Tide Congregation,” etc. Outside his hospital room, journalists struggle past each other to see Kent. He is inundated with letter and flower deliveries. The visitors patronize him with phony emotion; brief him on what the shooting means for his career, and how the media found out that Kent was depositing large amounts of money into various overseas bank accounts. They tell him the media’s made him out to look like a criminal, that thousands of followers are leaving the congregation, that he is under investigation by the police, and that stock holders are angry. All Kent can think is, “There is no God,” and it’s killing him. He doesn’t understand why he feels this way, attributes it to stress, and tries to ignore it. When told he’s “ruined,” he feels grief stricken in a way he never has before.

Act II

-Kent leaves the hospital with his wife. He looks at her with disdain and realizes that he only married her to further his career. He never trusted her. He thinks back to a time when he was in love. Before the success of “Bishop Kent Manning’s Rising Tide Congregation,” Kent deeply loved a woman named Sarah who didn’t care for any religion. Sarah gave Kent an ultimatum to choose a life with her and without religion, or to continue his life with the church. He chose the church.

-Kent’s need to assert his beliefs took hold of his life. He began to hate those who didn’t adhere to his belief system and those he described as “lost.” His addiction to religion evolved into an addiction to power, money, and influence. He thought of himself as chosen by God and used this belief to rationalize his behavior. He was convinced that he spoke to God every night and that God told him to gain as much power as possible.

-When he was raising money to build homes for the homeless, he cut corners on the construction at every turn; pocketing the savings. Homes he built became death traps; none were up to any safety standard. Entire buildings burned while people remained locked inside, the cheap, toxic materials used destroyed the health of tenants, and whole walls, floors, and ceilings were known to cave in. Kent funded groups that blew up abortion clinics, he bribed politicians and the police to make and enforce laws harmed the poor and benefited himself. For example, he’d bribe a politician to define certain housing areas as fit to be sold and paid the police to violently evict people living in these regions. He took and laundered money from people with known mafia connections. As a man chosen by God, he felt that others were beneath him and that only his word was truth and only his actions were holy.

-He’s now living his life with the unexplained belief that there is no God and is faced with a police investigation, the possible destruction of his congregation, and the growing realization that he is no chosen man, but a mere average person.

-Kent tries to go back to his television show. He is not as comfortable as he once was and fumbles his words. He trembles, shakes, and sweats. During a live broadcast and while speaking to his thinning congregation, Kent is verbally attacked by a group of protestors in the crowd. The protestors hold up mock dead bodies, signs, and pictures of dead bodies while continually scream over Kent. He’s trying to block the thought “There is no God,” with no success. To Kent, it is as if the protestors are demons tearing him apart mentally and physically. He feels pain throughout his body and finds it hard to stand. Through the protestor’s shrieks, Kent hears a familiar voice but can’t identify it. With all his strength, he moves towards the microphone and yells, “No man can judge me! Only through me does God bestow judgment! All of earth’s sinners will surely feel the never ending torment of hell!” The crowd becomes silent. Kent’s followers and the protestors stare at him for a moment. The silence is broken when a member of the congregation attacks one of the protestors, inciting a riot. Realizing what an arrogant and blasphemous remark he made on live television and amidst the chaos of a now full blown riot, Kent flees the church/TV set. While rushing to his car, Kent’s wife approaches him and says, “You’ve ruined us! You’ve ruined me!” Kent ignores her and walks on.

-While driving, Kent thinks about a world without God. He doesn’t know how to deal with his emotions or even reality without the idea that God is watching over him. He finds a small church deep in the city and goes inside. Inside the church and kneeling down with his hands in a tight prayer form, he pleads for help from God. He hears and feels nothing holy. In fact, just being inside the church makes him uneasy. He looks at the huge crucifix in front of him and screams, “Everything I did was in your name! I had a clear purpose! And you are nothing!” He thinks back to his father slaughtering the farm animals.
“God put these animals on earth for us to eat, Kent,” his father would say. “They have no souls. Only good they are is for making us stronger.”
“Only good they are is for making us stronger,” Kent thought. That phrase helped him rationalize the consequences of his criminal actions over so many years. The people he made suffer while he got rich, they had no souls. God put them on earth for Kent’s benefit. And now, there is no God. There are no souls.
“Is this funny to you?!” Kent asks the crucifix. He laughs as he realizes that he is no better than anybody else. “You got it all mapped out, don’t you?! Fuck…you.”
Kent’s kneeling in church, weeping, sweating, laughing, and hysterical. He looks back on his life and tries to find anything that was ever more important to him than religion.
“Sarah,” he thinks.

-After calling Sarah’s family, Kent finds out that Sarah is in the intensive care unit at St. Anne’s Memorial Hospital due to an “accident.” When Kent arrives at the hospital, he is told that Sarah has suffered third degree burns over 70% of her body and that her legs have been amputated. She was working as a receptionist at an abortion clinic for only three months before the building was bombed. At the time of the bombing, she was the only person in the building.

Act III (quick draft)

-Kent then goes to the top of the hospital and jumps off the building to commit suicide. He wakes up in a hospital bed and is visited by the guy who first shot him in the bank and who has the familiar voice Kent heard from the protestors. The ending is mostly like the original short story (w/kent speaking to the man who shot him).

*Keep in mind-the lyrics for the songs don't have to strictly adhere to any of the above text. This is just an outline depicting Kent Manning's evolution throughout the story. I'm sure we'll be dealing with different people's perspectives (i.e. the obsessed follower you introduced, the shooter, etc.

Two days ago we finished recording and writing for the next full length. We figured out that from start to finish we spent about 3 months writing and recording the entire thing.
There's a bunch of plans for the release but we'll get to all that sooner then later. What we do know is that Black Market Activities will be releasing the cd version and for the first time since we started we will be seeing a vinyl release as well from Closed Casket Activities. Some big plans in the works including a cd release weekend come early next year we are coining " A PUERTO RICAN CD RELEASE WEEKEND"! yes, we are going to puerto rico, yes we are doing a cd release there...why the fuck not?!

Start Tracking tomorrow

So oct 6th came quick. Updates on this have been sparse to say least in the last few months, but for good reason...we've been hard at work writing this damn thing.
So tomorrow we start getting drum sounds and maybe even start the tracking for the drums. All songs are written giving us the grand total of 10 songs. We'll prob make some last minute changes in the studio as some were already given rise too this evening at practice.
Stressed yes, but we're all feeling confident at the moment. That will probarly change as the nerves set in. I personally fucking hate recording..fuck!

The new record will tentatively be called....

"Bishop Kent Manning"

and will be based around the following fictional short story written by guitarist Kevin Howley.

A dead heart shrieks so loudly in the ER. In Bishop Kent Manning's case, his lifeless heart was loud enough to bring him back from the dead. The EKG meter hummed steadily until the Bishop's eyes blasted open, then continued with a rhythmic beeping. The EKG produced the beat of an appalling soundtrack. The cracking and scraping of bone, the slurping noise of blood, the whiz of cold machinery, and the muffled voices of doctors and nurses plundered horribly over the metronome of the EKG meter. His torso seemed a detached heap of metal and blood; an excavation site where he had the best view. Whether he was in shock or drugged, he felt no pain. His only real feeling was the trembling of his skull and he'd occasionally taste iron tickling the back of his throat. He was road kill; meat and bone being tenderized for consumption or a calf being packaged for distribution. His guts were exposed and his blood was decorating the ER staff. He had all the strength of a gnat smeared across a windshield and the only pain he felt stemmed from an echoing voice somewhere in his wiggling head.
"There is no God," he heard.
Even while he could see a smashed bullet being plucked from his midsection, his only worry was that damn voice. He never remembered thinking that God didn't exist and attributed the voice to the trauma he was experiencing. Even when his father died, when he'd watch the slaughtering of farm animals, when he'd cover his face in makeup for the television camera, when he was taking a shit, when he drove, when he slept, and especially when he counted money, he never doubted the existence of God. As he tried to ignore the voice, he heard someone mutter, "spinal anesthesia," and he fell asleep.
"Bishop," a voice called to him.
His mind fumbled to wake up.
"Kent! Wake the fuck up!" the voice continued.
He did wake up and tried to recognize the voice. Kent was in a hospital bed and sitting in a chair next to him was a stranger.
"Oh, right…my face," the stranger said. "You've never seen me."
"Who are you?" Kent asked.
"Well, when you rob a bank, Kent, the last thing you need is some shithead with a decent memory seeing your face so you usually wear a mask," the stranger said. "I wore a mask when we met. I wore a mask when I shot you!" the stranger laughed.
Fractions of memories began to add up in Kent's head and he remembered the voice. He remembered being in the bank when someone with a mask came in to rob the place. Kent tried to think of something substantial to say but could only whispered, "You."
"Yea," the stranger said. "Me." The stranger continued, "Imagine my surprise when I'm just trying to get some money from some bank and I see Bishop Kent Manning, that annoying fuck from TV, standing directly in front of me. I remember thinking that, if anything were to go wrong, at least I'd have a well known hostage to take. But then you tried that charming "on-air" type of shit with me and, I gotta tell ya, Kent, it irritated the fuck out of me. And then you just had to break down like such a little bitch in front of me. It made me sick. I had to kill you, y'know?"
Kent's eyes began to drip as his memory improved. Kent remembered speaking to this man and exactly what he had told him. Then he remembered, "There is no God," and sobbed.
"Yes!" the stranger said. "Just like that. It's fucking disgusting, Kent."
Kent tried to stop crying. He was always so good at conveying such confidence on television. When he was in front of the camera, while the phones rang, and while the funds kept rising, he was God. He thought of his church; the 26,000 members of Bishop Kent Manning's "Rising Tide" Congregation. Then he thought of what he had told this masked stranger in the bank.
"Oh yea," the stranger went on. "First you tried to get on my good side. You told me how barely any of the money you raise actually goes to helping anyone. And that, in fact, most of the money you raise goes to repossessing the homes of your "flock." You were going on and on about how people are such sheep; how they need someone to do their thinking for them. You were so pleased with yourself while telling me how these old widows shell out their children's inheritance to you. You told me about your fake bank accounts and all the political candidates who get most of the money. You told me how easy it would be for you to give me so much money to let you live. You said that you and I are alike. And, honestly Kent, I wasn't going to kill anyone, but here's this huge televangelist in front of me just pouring on the bullshit. I mean, I'm just a criminal. No grey area. You're just so fucking fake. And when I raised my gun, damn did the blubbering start," the stranger laughed. "Oh, it was too much. I really didn't care about how much money you could give me. I wanted to shoot you. So I did. But, hey, now that you survived, I kinda want that fucking money, Kent."
"There is no God," Kent's mind repeated.
With that echoing voice proclaiming so persuasively, Kent couldn't find a way to perform. Even though he was a cheat and a criminal, he always did believe in God. Now, Kent was empty. He just couldn't perform. Hell, he even tried to picture the face of a widow he'd taken money from. The proud Bishop. He meant nothing.
"There is no God," repeated.
"So, y'know, keep your mouth shut and heal up," the stranger said.
Kent's stomach dropped and his throat swelled.
"When you're all better, we'll take a nice walk to the bank together," the stranger said. "I shouldn't have to bore either of us with details of what would happen if you tell anyone about me," he continued. "I mean, your church and audience members, the politicians, the oh-so faithful, they'll be so disappointed, Kent." The stranger smirked. He had such sharp features. Kent was sure that there was something in the Bible about this, but he couldn't recall anything.
"So, yea, I'll be visiting every day until you're better," the stranger said as he got up from the chair and headed for the door.
Kent's eyes swam as they followed the stranger from the chair to the door. He thought back to that loud EKG meter and the shriek that woke him. If God was not responsible for these events, who was? How do atheists deal with such situations? How does anyone deal with anything? He had never had so many questions and each one felt like a dull nail being driven into his forehead. He thought that the hate of the world must have been in that bullet. A fat tear dropped from his cheek when he looked up at the stranger opening the door to leave his room.
"Don't look so down, bucko," the stranger said. "You're alive aren't you?"
With that, the stranger was gone and Kent was alone, really alone. He looked around his room and everything seemed to exist without purpose. The walls of his room, the window, the bed; everything was meaningless. He looked down at the IV in his arm and wondered why he should be kept alive. He wondered who kept him alive. He felt that a great deception had been taking place with no author or benefactor. He then removed the IV and, with all his strength, got out of bed. His head throbbed as he looked left to right. He walked towards the window and opened it. The warmth of the sun met a strong breeze and blanketed his body in euphoria.
"I feel," he thought.
He looked out the window. He looked down the 16 stories at all those people walking around with their own thoughts and ideas. The door to his hospital room opened and he hurled himself out of the window. From behind him, he heard an unearthly scream and, as the concrete launched skyward to meet him, "There is no God," flashed in his mind.

Yes the recording quality is shit and we even mess the song up at the end. This is to only serve as the very roughest idea of what we have been doing this week as we've been tucked away in our NH summer hottness.

Heat Wave

It's official, NH is in a heat wave. So what do we do, myself and kev get in my fuel efficient corolla and head straight to the beach. But this time there is no surfing, no swimming, only straight buisness. We were headed to Salem, Ma to do some research. Godcity is our destination! We were invited by the kind folks that inhabit trap them to to sit in uncomfortable quaters and observe there brand of the death roll. From what we could hear through the various bits of feedback and distortion this stuff will surely be made for the awesome!

The_Network is having some serious anticipation about recording already and the trip down to godcity not only served as some good times hanging with friends but also the possibility of filling those same walls with our own brand of scum. Of course myslef and kev couldn't say more then two words to Kurt before feeling very humbled and completly intimidated.

We're thinking about getting in there sometime before the first month of the next year, whenever that is we have no idea right now. But with three songs already done and only seven or so more to go the possiblity of getting in the studio is becoming more evident, assuming Kurt wants to work with five new scummers....more on that soonish.

Bust out the jams

3 days later and I'm updating this space again, can you hear the appause in my own head...? I'm going to keep this short though. Yesterday evening myself, Kev and Tim all ended up showing to practice a little early. All day we were sending messages back and forth like we usually do on practice days. There was a common excitement that filled these messages and when we all ended up getting to our practice spot we had one goal in mind...new jams!

We got right to it and a new song was created minus the bass and vocals of course. Tonight and the rest of the week we should be ironing out those details as bones and bennett will be heading up for a few days. These guys have to drive from about 2 hours everytime they come to practice and with the price of gas right now it's making sense for myself, Kev and Tim work on things when they aren't here and showing them the songs once they arrive. So I'm guessing the majority of this week will be focused on having these two learn there parts for this new song and tighten up the other new one. I'm hoping that song titles become more evident or refering to songs as new songs will quickly become redundant.

Oh and there some light plans for a band field trip tonight to the almight godcity. More on that depending on what happens...

writer's strike

First post...last post? we'll see. This has started as something I've aways wanted to do, chronical how/why, etc.. a full length album is created. Our little piece of worthless art that fixes everything in our everyday struggle with coping with social akwardness, depression, sleepless nights and overall dis-pleasure with how society has let it's fat, lazy, comical self go.

Right now I sit on the eve of one of the hottest days I can remember here in NH. Hot, sticky, sweaty and cripling. I figured placing a hot laptop on my lap would at least solve one of my ever growing lists of to do's. I'd like to say I'm going to be really good at this, keeping updates updated, pictures visually interesting and spelling mistakes to a minimum...all these things will most likey be intermediate at best. But my hope here is to actually and accuratley chronicle to our newest full length. Currently writing is in the very begining stages with each member of the_Network froathing at the mouth to create our brand of scum.

With the hopes of not spilling all the beans here right away what I can say is that this space and blog will serve to document whatever we see fit about how the new full length is coming along. Right now..no album title, no song titles and only 2 songs actually written. We are very much void of anything and everything right now and are artistically very much inspired. Where this inspiration leads us will become more evident in further entries?

What I do know is that the new stuff is definitly going in a little of new direction. Since the last one "this is your pig's portrait" we've had a new singer and bass player join, adding a lot to the writing process and overall sound in general. Louder, yes!
